So you have your website all set up and fully optimized, you have your regular backlinking and promotion. Now all you have to do is sit back and wait for the money to roll in.

And it does… for a while. However depending on your niche you may notice that over time your traffic begins to dwindle away, regardless of how much new content you put up and promotion you are doing.

That is NOT a cause for panic, but it is definitely your tip off that something has changed and that you need to find out how to fix it.

The first step is to identify WHAT has changed.

Do you still have the best internet business or have strong direct competitors emerged that are squeezing you out?

Do you still have good Google rankings?

Are all your new pages being indexed?

And most importantly – are people still searching for the keywords you are using?

Depending on your niche you can be extremely vulnerable to changes in the keywords people are using.

For example, if you have a website about relationships one of your keywords may be “dependence on others”. If 3 months later an episode of Oprah airs on that topic but they continuously use the phrase “inter-dependency”, there will be an increase in the number of people search for that keyword, and a decrease in the number of people searching for “dependence on others”.

Media and social networks have a very strong influence over the words and phrases we use, and therefore as they change so to do the keywords people are looking for.

It is important to remember that although keywords do not change daily, they DO change over time and that they do need to be checked and at times altered to adjust to those changes.

Some businesses can get away with only needing to do this once every 6-12 months, some require this every 1-3 months. A “check up” can be done very cheaply to ensure that the demand is still there for you.

If you see a steady decline with your visitors you should get a quick check done BEFORE taking action. If the problem is due to keywords then spending a bundle on adding new content is just going to lose you more money.

One of the best internet business tips I can give is to make sure you know what is CAUSING a problem before you start throwing money at it.
